You make fabric beads the same way you make rolled paper beads, but I prefer fabric. I haven't had any success when I tried making paper beads (yet). It's easier to roll the fabric, and the beads get chunkier faster. Here is a quick tutorial to show you how easy and fun this is! 1. Cut your fabric into triangles.
Mill Hill Colored Bead Flier from Mill Hill This is a fantastic color 4 page 'card' of the entire line of Mill Hill Beads! Three pages of beads -- which someone has sewn onto fabric! -- all in full color and grouped into color family order, and labeled as to color number.
The width would be the length of the fabric bead, and the length of the fabric should be about 1-1/2″ to 2″ inches. Apply the adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric. Trim the fabric to size if necessary so that it's perfectly straight on all sides.
As always Mill Hill's Bead Kits are an awesome value -- complete kits contain the 14ct perforated paper (think about 28ct linen or 14ct Aida as softer fabric options), all the flosses, beads and button embellishments. Each finishes 5 x 5, and is offered separately.
These handmade silk beads pair up brilliantly with novelty eyelash yarn. You can buy fabric beads to use in this necklace or make your own following the instructions in the book Fabulous Fabric Beads by Kristal Wick. (Or take a class with Kristal at Bead Fest Santa Fe in 2009.) Large fire-polished beads add sparkle and weight to the necklace.
This tutorial includes both how to make fabric beads and the necklace! Most fabric bead tutorials use a method similar to the one used to make paper beads, and each bead is individually hand rolled. The result is stunning but with 3 kids in my life it's completely impractical! So I came up with this easy method for how to make fabric beads.
This is a great tutorial! I've made the embellished fabric beads, too and you're so right - They ARE addictive! - and a great way to use up fabric scraps in new ways. I have a hard time making another quilt from the scraps used to make a quilt, but this continues to be a perfect way to use them up.
